TOK Garners Second Boom Shot Nomination in Vibe Awards
Dancehall group TOK picked up their second Vibe Awards nomination yesterday when the nominees in the 2005 staging of the awards were announced. The group's current Billboard chart climber Footprints (produced by Donovan 'Don Corleon' Bennett, has been nominated in the Boom Shot category.
"The Boom Shot category honours excellence in Caribbean music. We are just glad to be able to feature and showcase that range of music alongside hip hop and R&B. The nominations reflect the powerful explosion of the music which is having an effect on American radio," Rob Kenner, editor-at-large at Vibe Magazine said.
Other nominees in the Boom Shot category are Can't Satisfy Her by I Wayne; Tempted To Touch by Rupee, I've Got Your Man by Lady Saw; and Welcome To Jamrock by Damian 'Junior Gong' Marley.
Marley is up against Lose Control by Missy Elliott, Ciara and Fat Man Scoop; Pimpin All Over The World by Ludacris and Bobby Valentino; The Corner by Common; and Trapped In The Closet by R Kelly in the category for Reelest Video.
Commenting on selections for the various categories are done Kenner said: "The process usually starts with the staff writers at Vibe Magazine. We come up with between 30-40 songs that people and our staff hear banging hard on the radio and at the sessions. From there it is narrowed down by a panel of pacemakers comprising writers, readers and editors." Last year's winner in the Boom Shot category was the dancehall remix of Turn Me On by Kevin Lyttle featuring Spragga Benz.
TOK member Roshaun Clarke said it was a real honour for the group to get nominated for the Vibe awards. "We are honoured to be nominated a second time. If we don't win, just the fact that we are nominated means that our work is being recognised," Clarke said. The group's Gal Yuh A Lead single was nominated last year.
TOK recently completed a new video shoot for their Footprints single which was number one a few weeks ago on the influential New York urban radio station Hot 97 FM. The video shoot was shot on location in California and directed by Kevin deFreitas.
Ciara leads the pack of nominees in the 2005 Vibe Music Awards with five nominations. She is followed closely by Mariah Carey, John Legend and Kanye West with four nominations each. The awards will take place on November 12 in California and airs on Tuesday, November 15 at 8:00 pm on the UPN network.
The show will feature musical performances from chart-topping artistes and award presentations by the hottest celebrities from the worlds of music, fashion, television, sports and film.
